DNS settings - Windows XP/2000 and Vista

To check and/or change the DNS settings for Windows XP/2000 or Windows Vista, select the tab relevant to your operating system.

 

To obtain an IP Address Automatically follow these steps:

Step 1 of 9: Access the Windows Connections page.

  • Windows XP - Click Start, then Connect to, then Show all connections or
  • Windows 2000 - Click Start,  then Control Panel, then Network & Dial-Up Connections.

Step 2: Click view, then select Details.

Step 3: Under the LAN or High Speed Internet Section, check the Device Names listed on the screen.

  • If using USB - Right click the Local Network Connection that is connected to your ADSL or Cable Modem brand. (e.g 2Wire, SpeedTouch for ADSL or Netgear or Motorola for Cable) and select Properties.
  • If using Ethernet - Right Click the Local Network Connection that your ADSL or Cable modem is connected to and select Properties.


Step 4: Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties.

Step 5: TCP/IP Properties will be displayed.

Step 6: Ensure obtain an IP address automatically is selected.

Step 7: Ensure obtain a DNS server address automatically is selected.

Step 8: Click OK, then OK to close the window and save the settings.

Step 9: Close the Control Panel and Open up Internet Explorer.

Check TCP/IP settings for Windows Vista follow these steps:

To obtain an IP Address Automatically

Step 1 of 11: Click Start, then Control Panel.

Step 2: If the Control Panel is selected on the top left, click Classic View. If you are already in Classic View go to Step 3.

Step 3: In Classic View, Click Network and Sharing Centre.

Step 4: On the left side, click Manage Network Connections.

Step 5: Display Network Connections in Details Mode.

At the top of Network Connections, Click the arrow next to View Details.

Step 6: Under the LAN or High Speed Internet Section, check the Device Names listed on the screen

  • If using USB - Right click the Local Network Connection that is connected to your ADSL or Cable Modem Brand (e.g 2Wire, SpeedTouch and select Properties.
  • If using Ethernet - Right Click the Local Network Connection that your ADSL or Cable modem is connected to and select Properties.  


Step 7: Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) and select Properties.

Step 8: TCP/IP Properties should be displayed.

Step 9: Ensure obtain an IP address automatically is selected

Step 10: Ensure obtain a DNS server address automatically is selected.

Step 11: Close the Control Panel and Open up Internet Explorer.

All BigPond ADSL and cable customers should use theDNS serverIP addresses which are assigned to them dynamically during login.
If this can't be done for some reason, please use the following DNS servers:
